Giant pumps arrive in Hull

Two giant pumps, which will provide emergency back-up in the event of extreme weather have arrived at the Bransholme surface water pumping station. Yorkshire Water has already invested more than £500,000 in the resident diesel pumps which were damaged by floods in June, 2007.

The two new pumps - which can match the capacity of the existing equipment - take investment at the site to £1.5m and will be installed over the next few days. They offer 100 per cent back-up should the operation of Bransholme ever be threatened again.

"As we've already explained, the new pumps cannot prevent flooding should Hull experience storms like those we saw a year ago," said project manager, Steve Pace. "However, they will ensure that Bransholme keeps working regardless of the weather and that flood water recedes."

Yorkshire Water will continue to work with builders Kingswood Developments, Hull City Council and the Environment Agency on long-term solutions for the Bransholme and Kingswood estates, which are due to expand in years to come.

"When additional investment in the East and West Hull pumping stations is taken into account, Yorkshire Water has is already investing more than £16m in Hull," added Mr Pace. "However, we're committed to playing our part in additional long-term solutions and will work with other agencies to establish what these are."
